Châtillon is a village situated in the middle section of the Aosta valley, rich in history and particularly in roman ruins. Relevant examples are the arch bridge on the river Marmore (rising at approximately 40m from the water level) and the Paleo-Christian tombstones. It equally presents noteworthy medieval remains such as the Ussel Castle (the earliest example of stronghold rectangular on plan dating from 1350), which hosts important regional exhibitions, the Passerin d’Entrèves Castle (still occupied by the owners and considered to have the finest furniture in the region, as well as surrounded by an historical parkland open to visitors), the Baron Gamba Castle (home to the Regional Centre of Modern Art and also surrounded by an historical parkland open to visitors), the Château des Rives (also known as Saint-Clair, probably a Templar castle, a portion of the main walls of which is still standing). In terms of modern antiquity Châtillon has the only example of cast iron furnace in the Valley, used by the Napoleonic army and lastly operated for the construction of the Mole Antonelliana in Turin.
